Crespo Shop-A-Long

My Grocery Store

Pavilions - The Place for Everything...Sort Of...
There are two main reasons I go to Pavilions to buy and product. Familiarity and Convenience. I'm not arguing that there could be better places to buy Health Care items especially Natural ones, but this place is a short walk from my house. Because of this I have been going there for years and enjoy their many deals. However, when it comes to buying Natural based items over Conventional, the selection is pretty limited and hard to notice right away, unless it's placed right on the box. They don't have a specific section just for natural care items, they just mix them in with everything else and let you search for them. This can cause my shopping to take more time than I'd like, but it's about quality over convenience, right? Plus they usually have a buy one get one or half off deal going on, and being the poor artist that I am, this appeals to me the most. So I don't mind taking the time comparing brands to find my diamond in the rough.

Find & Compare

The only time I really use natural care products is when I'm sick or for vitamins. For when I'm sick, this could be a cold or some type of congestion. I want to use more natural products that are specifically drug-free. Nasal Congestion products are the most common that I scrutinize. The reason being is that most of the active ingredients in a Conventional Nasal Relief product are addictive and can become habit forming. No Bueno. So I scan and scour these product boxes till I find one that isn't. Now, this becomes easier with Vitamins, as almost all of them are Natural products. But even then, most of the decision making comes down to what's in it and who recommended it to me. I'll trust a word of a friend long before I trust any one products advertisement or sales pitch. Plus all the Vitamins are in one aisle, so I don't feel as if I need to search that hard for the one I want.

The Products

For Me
Each of these products I like for the same reason. Drug-free! I can't tell you enough how important that is to me. I already have a pretty addictive personality, don't even get me started on my problems with licorice. So having a drug free alternative for Nasal, Flu, and Vitamin choices is important. Although I haven't used any of these products yet, I would simply for that fact alone.

Not For Me
I just honestly don't think it'll work. It's basically incsence.

Conventional and Natural?

Although I know that some compaines must do this, I couldn't find any at my grocery store. Like at all. It was simply one or the other. I'm sure if I trecked out to more places I'd find one or two brands, but for now, my choices are limited.

Although I couldn't find one, it would be nice if, let's say, Head & Shoulders had a natural alternative. I had bad dandruff as a kid and my mom got me Head and Shoulders to help with it. However, because of my sensative skin, I wound up having a nasty reaction to some of the chemicals in the shampoo. The internet, at the time, wasn't really the resource it is now so I just lived with bad dandruff till I got older and started using more conditioners and other moisturizing products on my scalp. It would have been a social life saver had they offered a natural brand, which to this day, I still believe they don't.

All Mixed Up
Look and Compare Yourself
Although I think it would be nice to know right away which items were natural or conventional, at Pavilions, they lump them all together based on the product you're looking for. I guess this is nice actually since I can compare both types side by side, but as I keep mentioning this can be a bit of a treasure hunt at times. Or you'll find that there are NO natural alternatives what so ever, which can be a bit disheartening. However, each product is found in its appropriate place, which I guess is easier for the store to keep track of and organize.

William, one last thing here. Understand the "treasure hunt" and appreciate the metaphor! What would be good about a conventional brand like Head & Shoulders offering a natural product? What's the value to you of a conventional brand offering 'naturals'?

That's a great question!
The benefit of Conventional brands offer natural alternatives, like Head and Shoulders, is that I already know and trust that brand. It's familiar to me and more likely to be found in stores as it is a name brand.

  1. Thanks William.

    - I understand you couldn't find any brand that has 'natural' and 'conventional' products. Could you blog a bit about what would be good about a brand offering both? What's a value add for a 'conventional' brand offering 'naturals'? Any value add for a 'natural' brand offering 'conventional'?
