Me, Myself, & I - The Crespo

Welcome to me!

Hi there!

My name is William and I'm a 33 year old artist living in Hollywood!
I moved to California from Chicago, IL. Growing up in a large city was always fun, but everyone wants to leave home sooner or later. So one day in 2009 I decided to change everything, packed up my belongings and 2 cats, and set out to a new place with new opportunities! It's been 9 years since then and although life has had it's ups and downs I'm still consider the move one of the best, eyeopening, experiences in my life!

What I do for a Living!

I'm a Graphics Artist, but what even is that? Good question me!

I do a little of everything from Logos to Websites to Motion Graphics and Video Editing, I've gotten to experience a little of everything the graphic world has to offer! Being open to multiple fields has allowed me to experience a multitude of challenges as an artist, keep my work and daily life interesting in the best way! I've gotten the pleasure of designing websites and logos for comedy clubs, like the Westside Comedy Theater in Santa Monica, Ca. As well as Motion Graphics for Youtube shows like Epic Rap Battles of History!

Interests & Hobbies

I have a numerous amount of interests!

Skateboarding

I've been skateboarding for 20 years, and find it as a good way to exercise, relieve stress, and practice focus. Over the years I've gotten to have a few shop sponsors and even got to teach skateboarding to middle schools through NVISION & Nike!

Electronics

I've always been interested in Technology and knowing how things work! Growing up, I was the kid who loved to take things apart to see how they ticked, and then attempt to put them back together before I got in trouble! This curiosity led to a lot of great opportunities! I learned HTML from looking through the back end of websites. I own a breadboard and make tiny home electronics in my spare time, which helps me in fixing my own electronics before throwing them out. I've even built a few of my own computers from this self-attained knowledge! So if you're someone who thinks, I could never do that, don't! If I can do it, so can you! Just take something apart and try! You'll be surprised with the knowledge you walk away with, even if you break it.

Art & Comics

As a Graphic Artist, I'm obviously into art! I use to doodle a lot as a child and was in love with a multitude of comics and online-artists. After college I even made a few of my own comics! If you'd like to read them you can check out Cat People & My Comic Diary Boredom From The Train!
Which is exclusively on Instagram: @boredom_from_the_train

My Passions

Now things get interesting!

On top of being a Graphic Artist, I am also a Stand-up Comic & Film Maker. I've been a comedian since 2005 where I started in Chicago. Since then you can now find me frequenting the Clubs and Open-Mics here in LA. My home club being The Westside Comedy Theater in Santa Monica, Ca!

My personal film work is still in it's infant stage, as I have only been making my own shorts since about 2015. Yet, even with my inexperience, I got to be apart of Channel 101, a once a month film fest in Downtown LA, with my web-series Klown Stomper! Which is basically "BLADE" with Clowns instead of Vampires!

Both of these passions allow me to grow as an artist. I get to challenge myself in ways I don't find in any other art form. From the creation of a joke or film idea, to seeing how it plays out in front of a live audience, the experience is always new and refreshing! I'm also a total night owl, and enjoy the meeting new people through these experiences!

How My Body Functions

Alright, let's be honest here.

My body is much like a broken watch. Watches in general just function, we give them little repair or maintenance and even the knowledge of how to maintain or fix them is lost on most of us. However, unlike a watch, we can't just throw our bodies out for a new one. So like my interest in Electronics, I must learn how to fix and repair this very intricate and beautiful piece of machinery. As I make the journey into late adulthood it will be up to me to take the steps to learn how to repair it. Something I myself know very little about.

The Approach to my Personal Health

The truth is...I don't really have one.
I try to do the simple things we all already know.

  • Eat Healthy

  • Fruits, Veggies, moderated amounts of fats and sugars

  • Work Out

  • I walk for an hour once a day, and skateboard on the weekends.

    That should be enough, right?
Wrong, as I failed to mention that I'm a smoker and drink like a fish after Comedy Shows.
    Not so good.
This causes me to be out of breath quicker. I wake up tired and lethargic for the first half of my day. It also depletes my immune system. So if I could change anything it'd be this.

    So what's the issue?

The truth is motivation. With things like stresses like work, bills, relationships, networking, and so on. It can be very easy for us to ignore our body's real needs for its psychological satisfaction.

For example, let's say, I wake up late but still make it in time for work. Because I woke up late I missed my opportunity for breakfast and a morning walk. So all through work I feel hungry and lethargic, perhaps still sleepy. Then after work, I run straight to a comedy show, but wait, I still need to eat. So instead of getting something healthy, I grab something cheap from a fast food place just to keep myself functioning. Now I'm really upset I missed that workout. However, my show went well! So now I decide to celebrate by having 2-8 drinks, and if I'm drinking, I'm totally going to want a cigarette or 2....or 22. Eventually, it becomes 4am, I've stumbled home and fallen asleep. No time for dinner. Only to wake up late the next day and have the process start all over again.

Now, if I'm in my 20's, I don't really feel or notice the effects of how I'm treating myself cause I'm young and my body recovers quickly. However, as I age, I feel the effects more and more, till my body simply can't keep up anymore and develops a serious health condition.

To battle this, we go back to our theory of the watch. I must look closely at myself and truly consider what I am doing and what I need. And take the time to develop a new skill to help this piece of machinery I have always ignored and just expected to function. Till it doesn't.

My personal goals with my body as of right now are to just keep functioning. Fill my body with enough fuel to carry out my daily tasks. But I don't put a lot of thought into it, it's just here's what I can afford/find and this is what I get. The change I would like to make is to have a body that doesn't just function but functions a peak efficiency, and for that, I'll need to make some changes.

    My Daily Routine

I interact with a ton of different products every day, but here are a few I regularly use.

  • Emergen-C

  • I love these little packets! Nothing like a lil vitamin C & B-12 to start the morning and help me wake up!

  • Dunkin' Donuts

  • After I get some vitamins in me, I like to go for a long walk around my neighbourhood! Which usually ends with me heading to Dunkin' Donuts for some coffee and a bagel for breakfast. I LOVE this place!! It's a bit of a childhood memory of mine, being from Chicago originally. Every morning I'd walk my mom to the train station before she started work and we'd get a coffee and bagel. So now, that's what I do before work! Dunkin, I think gets this, they've always seemed like a family-friendly establishment.

  • Pavilions

  • My local grocery store! This place is affordable and friendly! It's the first place I go for almost everything, especially good ingredients for me to cook at home. I mostly buy vegetables, but they have everything! And if you're a Chicagoan, they're owned by the same company as Jewel-Osco! Pavilions definitely gets being apart of my affordable but healthy lifestyle, they always have a sale of some sort, and usually, on the items I like to eat. Putting my financial worries at ease, while knowing I'm not sacrificing quality.

  • 7-11

  • In case I'm too tired to make the walk to Pavilions, this is my next best option! We've all been inside one, they have a lot of snacks and more! But the one by me knows me! They know my name, my favourite snack (KIND Bars) and my favourite brand of cigarettes (American Spirits - Light Blue). It feels nice after a long day and walk into a place that not only knows you by name but has your products ready for you without asking!

  • Garnier Frutis

  • Now this one is the most important to me! I have insanely curly hair and it dries out pretty fast! On top of that, my skin is a bit sensitive to certain soaps. This is the only brand I've found to help not only keep my hair hydrated and curled but is also good for my skin!

Well, that's all from me for now!
Thanks for taking the time to get to know me!

    1. Welcome William! My name is Kim, and I'll be corresponding with you throughout this assignment. I'll post after each blog, so be sure to check back to see if there are any open questions.

Great job on your first blog! I enjoy the humor / comments you've incorporated. I do have some questions:

      - If you could change anything about how your body is functioning, what would you change and why?

      - Do you put a lot of effort in eating well / exercise, or is it just 'habitual'? what are your priorities or goals?

      - Could you post an image depicting where you are on your health and wellness journey? (note: Pictures must be posted in the original blog, not here in comments). You state that you feel differently in your 30's then 20's - can you tell me if your routine has changed at all, or are you doing the same thing, and why?

      - Coincidentally, I'm from Chicago, and I'm drinking my Dunkin coffee right now :). In terms of your products, can you tell me what each 'gets' about you? For example, Dunkin might 'get' that you like routine, you miss your family, it's a good value, etc..

      Thanks!
